Labour’s plan to make work pay: What can we expect?

In today’s changing world, it’s crucial that the wellbeing and prosperity of working people is prioritized. Back in May, Labour published an article linked to their manifesto entitled ‘Labour’s Plan to Make Work Pay: Delivering A New Deal for Working People’. This reflecting Labours comprehensive plan as part of their manifesto promises to boost wages, enhance job security, and support the growth and success of individuals in the workplace by delivering a genuine living wage among other points. The legislation is expected to be put forward before parliament within the first 100 days of the party’s entry into government

The party’s plan will ensure more people stay in work, make work more family-friendly, and improve living standards, boosting economic growth.

What exactly do Labour propose? (Below is a sample of what is proposed, read the full PDF document at the end of this article for the full run down of the proposal)

  • Deliver a genuine wage

‘The creation of the National Minimum wage was one of the greatest achievements of the last Labour government and has lifted many working people out of poverty, and narrowed the pay gap between men and women, older and younger workers and between places.’

  • Make work secure

‘Labour will embrace technological advancements in a way that ensures both workers and our economy benefit. Helping to ensure workers can benefit from flexible working, including opportunities for flexi-time contracts…by making flexible working the default from day one for all workers, except where it is not reasonably feasible.’

  • Support working people

‘Labour will update trade union legislation, so it is fit for a modern economy, removing unnecessary restrictions on trade union activity and ensuring industrial relations are based around good faith negotiation and bargaining.’

  • Ban on exploitative Zero-hour contracts

‘Labour will end ‘one sided’ flexibility and ensure all jobs provide a baseline level if security and predictability, banning exploitative zero hour contracts and ensuring everyone has the right to have a contract that reflects the number of hours they regularly work, based on a 12-weel reference period.’

  • Fire and rehire

‘Labour will end the scourges of ‘fire and rehire’ and ‘fire and replace’ that leave working people at the mercy of bullying threats. Reforming the law to provide effective remedies against abuse and replace the inadequate statutory code brought in by the Government with a strengthened code of practice.

How can businesses get ahead? These processes ideally need to be in place before this legislation comes into play. Meaning a good business should already have some of these processes already implemented and be working towards others. The change may seem significant but is 100% necessary and provides equal opportunity; businesses need to start to be flexible around their staff and adapt to modern times.

Labours plan to make work pay is rooted in its mission to grow Britain’s economy and raise living standards across the country. By prioritizing fair wages, job security, and supportive working conditions, Labour aims to empower working people and improve their overall quality of life. With a proven track record of introducing fundamental rights in the workplace, Labour is committed to working in partnership with businesses to usher in a new era of positive change, building a stronger and more equitable future for all working people in the UK.
